Sweep dreams are made of this: Keeping Greater Shepparton clean

Greater Shepparton City Council is inviting the community to take a closer look through its Keeping Greater Shepparton clean campaign, which highlights the everyday work that keeps streets, footpaths and public spaces clean, safe and welcoming.

From early morning sweeps to ongoing cleaning across parks and public areas, this work happens every day across the region. It includes scheduled street and footpath sweeping, public bin servicing, litter collection, responding to illegal dumping and littering, removing graffiti on public assets and more.

Street and footpath sweepers play a key role in this effort, operating across the CBD, residential areas and surrounding towns on scheduled programs. Council uses both large street sweepers and smaller footpath sweepers to maintain different areas.

Street sweepers can collect up to three cubic metres of debris per load and complete up to six loads a day during peak leaf season, collecting leaves, dirt, wrappers and litter from roads and gutters. Footpath sweepers operate in shopping areas, shared paths and public spaces, collecting up to one cubic metre of debris per load.

Street sweepers also cover significant distances, travelling up to 550 kilometres each week, which is like travelling from Shepparton to Geelong and back, at an average speed of around 8 kilometres per hour while sweeping.

Over time, this consistent work adds up, with more than 1,000 tonnes of debris collected across Greater Shepparton each year.

Council’s Acting Director Infrastructure, Janelle Bunfield said the campaign shines a light on work that often goes unnoticed.

“This work happens every day across Greater Shepparton and plays an important role in keeping our public spaces clean, safe and welcoming,” she said.

“From street sweeping and graffiti removal to litter collection and public cleaning, there is a significant amount of work happening behind the scenes across our region.

“We all play a part in keeping Greater Shepparton clean. Simple actions like using bins correctly, reporting issues early and keeping spaces tidy can make a real difference.”

To support this, Council has prepared a dedicated webpage that brings together information and links to help residents report issues and access the right services. This includes reporting graffiti on public assets, requesting free graffiti removal kits for private property and reporting illegal dumping or littering through the relevant authorities.
