Greater Shepparton is currently experiencing an extreme drought that is impacting not only agricultural production, but also extended industries and communities.

Federal and State Governments along with the Greater Shepparton City Council recognise that these are exceptional times and they call for exceptional assistance.

After losing their farm to drought, Brian and Nerida Egan decided to start a charity to take practical help right to the farm gate. He called it "Aussie Helpers". The charity has given away half a million dollars worth of drought aid in the last financial year and even won support from a foundation in the US set up by Hollywood legend Paul Newman.

Centrelink - Exceptional Circumstances Payment Information
The Exceptional Circumstances Relief Payment (ECRP) is delivered by Centrelink on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. The payment provides assistance to farmers living in 'exceptional circumstances' affected areas who are having difficulty meeting family and personal living expenses.

Farm Help is an initiative under the Australian Government's Agriculture Advancing Australia package and is designed to assist farm families in serious financial difficulty to improve their long-term financial prospects, obtain off-farm income or re-establish outside farming.

Centrelink - Farmer Assistance Package
On Tuesday 24 October 2006, the Australian Government announced a further $30 million for the Professional Advice and Planning Grant. This grant is offered in recognition of the impacts on farming enterprises of prolonged drought and the importance of professional advice and planning to the long-term viability of farming enterprises.

Department of Primary Industries - Drought Information for Victoria
Australia is a dry continent which is subject to unreliable rainfall and drought. Victoria is currently experiencing a one in a hundred year drought. In recognition of this the Victorian Government has formed the Drought Taskforce and made available a number of resources to help the community get through this drought. Victorian Farmers Federation
The VFF launched its drought support website in Gippsland on Monday 27 November 2006. Designed to give up to date, relevant information on financial and community support, it is the newest tool in farmers arsenals to cope with the drought.
